Gov. Hochul Responds To Debate On 'Accessory' Housing

ACCESSORY DISASTER: Last week, Nassau Legistor Tom McKevitt and local leaders found a legislation hidden in Gov. Hochul’s budget that would essentially get rid of all single-family zoning laws in the state. Hochul is attempting to avoid state legislation and get a budget passed that would destroy the suburbs as we know it in NY, according to local officials.

Local leaders such as Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman, Hempstead Supervisor Don Clavin, Oyster Bay Supervisor Joe Saladino, N. Hempstead Supervisor Jen DeSena, and many other local officials got together to alert residents what the governor is trying to do and get a call-to-action via phone calls and petition signings.

Kathy Hochul on Tuesday responded, “Accesory Dwelling Units (ADUs) can be a quick, lower -cost way to help combat the statewide affordable housing crisis, which is particularly acute on Long Island and in New York City.”

Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman has commented on the matter as well saying it will “…give anyone the authority to build anything they want at anytime, and that’s not what we want here in Nassau County…”

Hempstead Supervisor Don Clavin commented as well saying, “…what the governor is attempting to do with this legislation, it will not only destroy the quality of life, but if the governor gets her way it’s going to have an impact on our environment with water usage, sewage, our parks, our roadways – every fabric of our living in the suburbs and what we pay for will literally be destroyed…”

What are your thoughts on this matter? Should single-family zoning laws be erased, modified, or both? Comment ⬇️
